The Danica Dance – Part 1

As it is nearly May, I thought it was time for a little info on the famed Ephemera danica – The Mayfly. This first part (of a two-part series) focuses on the culture and traditions of the Mayfly, and then continues to explore the life cycle. Part 2 is all about the techniques used to fish the various lifecycle stages – in both Rivers & Stillwaters. This period of the year (mid-May Through to the end of June) is where virtually any angler can cast a fly and experience the magic. It’s colloquially known as “Duffers Fortnight”.

Early Season Trout Tactics

One of the best places to start when fishing rivers in the early season is to understand which insects are hatching under the water. I won’t give you a lecture on Latin classifications and the minute differences between individual insects, for this post I will just show you the basics of the 4 main insects that you’ll see on your local river and how to identify them for the next time you’re there.

Cory Cuje – Nymphing, from Good to GREAT – A Teaser!

Earlier this month, I sat down (virtually) with Cory Cuje (aka Old Dominion Trout Bum – one of the best nymph anglers in the USA) for a chat – all about nymphing.

He was just about to depart for The Flyfishing Show (in Edison, New Jersey, USA) to give a presentation, titled “Nymphing – from Good to GREAT!” – so I twisted his arm to practice it on me first!

French Nymphing Masterclass – Build Your Own Leader

French Nymphing – the name alone sounds sophisticated, like a fishing technique you’d need to practice with a beret perched on your head. But rest assured, this isn’t some exclusive Gallic secret. French Nymphing is one of the most effective fly-fishing techniques out there – whether you’re chasing wild trout in alpine streams or trying to outwit a finicky fish who thinks your fly looks more like a soggy raisin than a tasty morsel.
